This was the second time Maya had to hear bad news delivered from the lips of surgeons. She lifted the white sheet covering the body and looked down at Arthur, his eyes forever shut. Then, she gently reached out and wiped the tears that were clinging to the corner of his eyes. The surgeon had stitched the gaping wound on his chest and cleaned the body, leaving nary any flecks of blood dotting the skin. Her heart twisted in her chest as the pain that she couldn't register, refused to register, slammed into her all in one go. "Why did you save me?" she asked, the recipient remaining silent. Then, she pressed her forehead against his cold one and murmured, "I might have walked out on you, but you had a life, didn't you? You had your career, your children, and you might even find a new special someone. Why did you have to go and sacrifice yourself for me?" She waited, but no answers came.
