Allison watched Megan's face twist with hatred as she spewed her resentment. A hollow feeling spread through Allison's chest. "I never realized you hated me this much."
"Yes, I absolutely despise you," Megan snarled, venom dripping from every word. "Every man I've ever wanted has only had eyes for you. It was like that in school, and it's still happening now." Her perfectly manicured nails dug into her designer purse. "It's been that way our entire lives. My family has more status than yours, I dress better than you—yet they always choose you."
Allison felt too tired to argue. Megan seemed unhinged, trapped in some imaginary competition Allison had never signed up for.
