Max's quick apology was unexpected by Elizabeth. [School staff.] This answer made Elizabeth pause. It was customary for him to know people at the school. If someone saw Max with Sylvia and Egbert and mentioned their parents, it seemed only natural. But didn't everyone at the school think that Keith was Sylvia and Egbert's father? Did he know about this, too? If he knew about this, why did he still want to meet with her? The more Elizabeth thought about it, the more she felt that something was off about this situation.
