I shouldn't have watched them.
It wasn't jealousy exactly—more like something softer, sadder. As Aisha and Simon clung to each other in the center of my office, whispering apologies and promises in low, aching voices, something inside me twisted. The kind of twist that comes from witnessing something pure and knowing it doesn't belong to you.
I turned away before they noticed. Pretended to shuffle through patient files I didn't care to read. My hands fumbled, and one of the folders slipped to the floor. The quiet thump echoed louder than it should have in the stillness of the room.
A small laugh drew my attention from the floor.
Emma stood in the doorway, hugging a thermos to her chest like a shield. She wasn't smiling mockingly—it was that soft kind of smile, the one people gave when they recognized pain they also carried.
