As we approached the second base, the thick wooden door sealing its entrance stood like an immovable sentinel. We knocked several times, each echo reverberating in the cold air, but no one answered. The eerie silence that followed heightened our unease.
Glancing at one another, we silently acknowledged the growing tension. Something was not right.
Aldrich, ever the seasoned warrior, broke the silence. “It’s an iron rule,” he said firmly. “No matter the mission, someone must always remain behind to guard the base. With Frank’s experience, it’s impossible that he wouldn’t have emphasized this to his team.”
