Chapter 63
Scarlett's POV
The council chamber hummed with noise when Lucien and I arrived. The tall arched ceiling caught every murmur, amplifying the whispers and gossip they had heard about us.
Their eyes tracked me instantly—some openly, others with fleeting glances they thought I wouldn't notice. Because I had been exposed to them a lot, I was no longer bothered by their stares. It wouldn't affect me as long as I could win the bill and defeat Alexander.
However, the judgment in their eyes still felt like claws scraping my skin.
It seemed Faye couldn't wait any longer and had directly spread rumors about me—in an attempt to cover her own scandals—no, the truths about herself, about who she was and why I was fighting so hard against them.
I didn't know what rumors she had planted again in the minds of the people, but I knew for certain that they were all about her and that she twisted them into lies against me. Surely, in the eyes of the people, I was the one who betrayed Alexander with Lucien.
