The Ghost
Amelia's POV
Tokyo doesn't taste like him, and that's exactly why I'm here.
The Sumida River reflects city lights in fractured patterns, and I sit on its bank with convenience store sake and the kind of peace I haven't felt in years. Three months in this city, and I've finally stopped checking over my shoulder for grey eyes and cedar cologne.
Three months since I've thought of Victor as anything but a mistake I survived.
Almost.
My phone buzzes—Holly, probably checking if I'm still alive and not living exclusively on ramen. But the message that loads makes my breath catch.
Holly: OMG. Did you see this???
The attached screenshot is from some business gossip site, the headline screaming in bold font:
ASHFORD HEIR CALLS OFF ENGAGEMENT TO TECH HEIRESS - FAMILIES IN TURMOIL
Below it, a photo of Victor leaving what looks like a lawyer's office, his face carved from stone. And beside him, conspicuously absent, no Miley Chen.
My hands shake as I read the article.
