Chapter 684

"Zion, the first time we met was at that auction, right?" Maeve asked. "Yeah." "You were deliberately raising the bid to get my attention, weren't you?" "I was," Zion admitted with a hint of laughter in his voice. Maeve continued, "You're so sneaky. Who taught you to get a girl's attention like that?" Zion chuckled softly, "It was the only thing I could think of at the time." "But what if… what if I hadn't shown up that night? Or if I'd shown up looking like a mess?" Everything had hinged on that auction. If things had gone the way they did in her previous life, where she'd imitated Clara's style and arrived disheveled, she would have been the laughingstock of the night. Zion wouldn't have given her a second glance. He might have even found her ridiculous. "No matter how you showed up—dressed to kill or in a mess—as long as you were there, I knew I wanted you." "Liar…" In their past life, Maeve and Zion never crossed paths. If what Zion said was true, given his personality, they should have met sooner. As Maeve fell silent, Zion suddenly cupped her face in his hands. His deep, narrow eyes brimmed with so much love that they seemed to overflow. In a low voice, he said, "Maeve, I would never lie to you." "I know. Even if the whole world lies to me, I know Zion never will." Maeve smiled gently. They leaned in and shared a kiss, one that was long and intense, leaving them both breathless. Eventually, Zion reluctantly pulled away. His voice was hoarse with emotion. "You're doing this on purpose to tempt me." Maeve's cheeks flushed as she gently pushed Zion away. "I'm going to take a shower." With that, she dashed around the coffee table and ran toward the bathroom. Zion watched her shy retreat and smiled faintly. But soon, the smile in his eyes began to fade. When his gaze shifted to the TV, his expression grew somber. The following day, news of Jefferson Group's stock plummeting was all over the internet. Maeve hadn't expected Bailey to bring down Jefferson Group's stock so quickly. Zion came out of the room and handed Maeve a new phone. "I got you a replacement. Try not to lose this one." "I will." Maeve took the phone and was about to contact Bailey when Zion suddenly said, "Aren't you forgetting something important?" "What?" Before Maeve could react, Zion pulled a ring out of his pocket. Seeing the ring she had lost, Maeve quickly reached for it, but Zion lifted it out of her grasp. "You remembered your phone but not the ring? Seems like this ring isn't as important to you as your phone." Maeve stomped her foot in frustration. "I knew you had it! Now hurry up and put it on me!" Seeing the anxious look on her face, Zion finally relented. He took her slender hand and slipped the ring back onto her finger. His tone turned serious. "Don't ever lose it again."
