She scolded, Jaxon visibly tensing behind her causing me to glance amusedly in his direction. I quickly composed myself and cleared my throat, ready to go along with the lie that my best friend had practically begged me to follow.
"Well, you know how it is with basketball season," I offered as a response, trying to keep my gaze sincere as I nodded along and pretended that it was the youth center’s fault for the last-minute party mix up; and not the fact that Jaxon had actually just booked it for the wrong date.
Levi still looked bitter as both Jaxon and I held our breath to see if she'd take the bait. I guess Jaxon grew too panicked, as he eventually just let her go and pulled away with an awkward but shaky smile.
