“What's wrong?” Rachel asked immediately. “You liin like you've seen a ghost.”
I quickly shook my head. “It's nothing of that sort. You can trust me.”
She watched me as I managed to scramble to my feet, clutching to my bag as I headed to my car. I barely gave myself the time to breathe. I immediately put my car in drive and headed towards the lab.
As soon as I walked in, I gave a small nod to the receptionist, who was barely paying attention. I found the lab assistant again, and there was a small smile on his face, but it didn't quite reach his eyes.
“Hello,” I greeted, and ge handed me a cup of water. I coildnbarely bring myself to drink, but I did anyway. The water tasted stale for all I care. But I wasn't exactly there for the waiter, was I?
“Can I see the test results?” I asked immediately. “What did it say?”
He reached into his cupboard, handing me a white envelop with my name written on it. I was barely breathing as I opened the crispy paper.
