Aaron’s POV
I stare at the contents of my fridge as I consider what to eat for dinner. I’ve gotten so used to cooking for both Ruby and myself that it feels weird planning a meal for one.
I close the refrigerator door, wondering if I’m even hungry. The sun is slowly sinking toward the horizon out the kitchen window, so I’ll need to eat something soon. I don’t want to make Mae wait for me in our clearing.
A small smile crests my lips, quickly curving into a greedy grin as I remember that Mae said she and Henry broke up. After so much time convincing myself that I would let them be together, that maybe he was even better for her than I was, I had stopped hoping for them not to work out. Now that they aren’t together anymore, I dare to let that hope return.
My smile falls though as I realize that they didn’t specify who broke up with whom. Mae mentioned it was amicable, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t break her heart, too. I should have asked, should have checked on her, should
