Aaron’s POV
I stand in Mae’s kitchen, processing how much thought she has clearly put into whether or not she can trust me. She’s grinning at my assertion that anyone who threatened our child would be long dead, but I don’t smile back. Because I’m dead serious.
I glance at the piece of paper where she hypothetically wrote down her roasted broccoli recipe. “Any other theories?”
She watches me intently. “Not yet.”
I’m glad she believes I actually want to help her get elected. But I’m also glad she’s still testing whether or not she can trust me. I know I haven’t even close to earned her trust yet.
Maybe for the first time in my life, I want to actually earn the things I get.
As we stare at each other, I realize how much Mae must trust my love for Ruby if that was the only reason she thought might motivate me to trick her. Even if Mae’s not ready for me to love her, I’m glad she has faith in my love for Ruby.
