The private waiting lounge was silent except for the ticking of the wall clock and the faint hum of air conditioning.
The room had been prepared for us because of who we were. The Donald name carried weight even here, in a hospital fighting to keep up with the surge of patients.
The lounge was nothing like the crowded waiting halls we had walked past on the way in.
Out there, rows of metal chairs had been filled with anxious families, their voices low, their eyes darting toward swinging doors that never opened fast enough.
But here, in this enclosed suite, the furniture was softer, dark leather chairs, a long sofa, even a small sideboard with coffee and bottled water.
The walls were muted cream, the floor covered by a thick rug instead of linoleum. A nurse waited discreetly outside, ensuring no one else would disturb us.
