Katelyn’s POV
I stared out the window, watching the city blur past in elegant streaks of light and motion. The streets were getting wider, the air fresher, the buildings taller and more polished. It didn’t look anything like the farmland I had imagined when Marcus said my birth mother was a woman who hauled sacks of potatoes.
“Wait a minute,” I said, narrowing my eyes. “Why are we heading toward Tribeca? Isn’t my home on a poor farm?”
Jack glanced at me from the driver’s seat with a smirk. “Who told you that?”
“Marcus,” I replied flatly. “He said my biological mother worked on a farm, hauling potatoes.”
Jack gave a sharp laugh. “You really believed that?”
I frowned. “Wasn’t I supposed to?”
He shook his head, amused. “Your mother doesn’t carry potatoes, Katelyn. She owns the entire farm, well.… multiple farms actually. Your family are the employers, not the workers.”
I blinked. “You’re serious?”
“As a heart attack,” he said. “That story Marcus gave you? That’s not even close to reality.
