In truth, Amelia dreaded having to borrow money from Caleb. She'd always known he harbored feelings for her, and every time he paid her, it was more than anyone else received. Once when she visited Caleb's company, one of his colleagues quietly told her that every project Caleb assigned her paid significantly more than others. In reality, those projects didn't actually warrant such high compensation. Caleb had been secretly covering the difference out of his own pocket. He probably didn't tell her the truth out of consideration for her pride. Amelia didn't want to make things awkward for both of them, so she pretended not to know. Although she outwardly accepted Caleb's kindness, she found opportunities to return the extra money to him via his company, despite Caleb being unaware. She knew she wasn’t good enough for Caleb, so she never tried to cross that unspoken line. She always maintained a distance from him. She hadn't been good enough for him then and was even less so now.
