Eileen's POV
I woke up to the soft creak of floorboard and the low hum of voices. My body felt like it had been torn open and clumsily stitched back together. Every inch of me ached—a dull, burning pain that radiated from the bite on my shoulder to the very tips of my fingers. My eyelids fluttered open slowly, heavy like iron curtains. Light streamed through the infirmary windows, bathing the room in gold. I blinked against it and squinted up at the blurry figures hovering over me.
“Eileen,” someone whispered urgently. A hand touched my cheek, warm and trembling. I turned my head, and the blur sharpened into Arthur’s worried face. His brows were drawn, and his eyes were red-rimmed, like he hadn’t slept in days.
“She’s awake,” Brett’s voice followed, cracked and relieved. “Oh, thank the goddess. Eileen, you’re back.”
