The Night of D-Day
Maya's POV
That uneasy feeling hadn't left me all day. It was subtle, like a tremor just beneath the surface, but I could feel it, humming low in my chest. Something was coming, though I had no clue what. I wasn’t alone in sensing it either. Mom had mentioned the same thing earlier, while we set the plates for dinner. The air had turned heavy, like it was bracing itself.
Dinner came exactly at five. We all sat down, trying to carry on like everything was normal. The earlier laughter had faded. The silence at the table wasn’t uncomfortable, just... expectant. I kept glancing at the door, half expecting Elena or Rita to burst in with some dramatic announcement. But now it was already past seven, and nothing had happened. Maybe they were waiting for the ceremony. Or maybe I was just being paranoid.
