My heart lurched to a stop.
With the blade of weed still dangling from his mouth, Carl pointed at the run-down kitchen across from us and said, "Six years ago, I stabbed my stepfather to death with a butcher knife right there."
At that moment, my mind went blank.
"You wanted to know about my past, right?" Carl whirled to fix me with a grave look. He spat out the blade of weed. "Well, listen up."
Carl launched into his story after that, and it was from there that I understood his past. Compared to mine, his past seemed even more miserable and messed up.
I might be in hell now, but at least I had a happy, complete childhood. Carl, on the other hand, had a terrible childhood that set him up for a dark, twisted personality.
Carl's father was in the army, but he went missing while out on a special mission when Carl was just a little boy. One said "missing", but in truth, the man had died in battle. The army only deemed him missing because they couldn't find his body.
