Chapter 3
The next morning, I was met with a surprise—Scott came home. The edge of the letter of understanding poked out of his briefcase.
I never thought I would live to see the day when the ever-proud and egoistic Scott came home to grovel for the sake of a lady. Ironically, however, he didn't do it for me.
Scott cleared his throat uneasily before changing into a pair of indoor slippers and entering. He acted as if nothing had happened.
I didn't want Mom's effort to go to waste. So, I reheated yesterday's food and carried it out on a tray. In a way, it served as a farewell.
When I put the bowl in front of Scott, he was already sitting there, waiting for me to serve him. I caught the smugness in his eyes and realized that he had misread the situation.
He thought I had compromised and wanted to make him happy, as I'd always done.
"Now, that's more like it. I'm glad you figured it out. It's your duty to serve me, raise our daughter, and look after my mom and dad. You shouldn't waste time on your parents," Scott lectured me as he ate.
I didn't say anything to him. When he was enjoying his food, I immediately shoved the dashcam into his hands.
Scott suddenly choked and began coughing violently. He gave me a look of utter disbelief. At the next moment, however, he grinned slyly and composed himself.
"Since you found out about it, there's no need to hide it anymore. The lady in the video was my fellow apprentice and my first love. If she hadn't gone overseas for further study, I would've married her instead of you.
"Now, she's back, and she's pregnant with my baby. I have a strong sense of responsibility. That's why I couldn't let you pick on her.
"Moreover, I was the one who let her practice on your mom. We were family. So, it would've been okay if Yvonne made a small mistake. I didn't know your mom would die from it. What's worse, she even left Yvonne to bear the blame for her death.
"It was your fault as well. You should've kept a close eye on your mom. She wouldn't have died if she had just stayed home!
"My point is, we have failed Yvonne, and that's why you're gonna sign the letter of understanding."
My heart clenched. I couldn't believe that Scott was the one who let Yvonne practice on Agatha. He couldn't care less about my mom's life, but in the end, he got his own mother killed instead. His wrongdoing had come back to haunt him.
Yet, Scott wasn't done talking.
"Whitney, a doctor has to be merciful, and you're no exception. Yvonne is pregnant. How could you have ruined her and her baby's future?"
I grinned wryly and asked, "Have you thought about Danica and my future when you spread false rumors about me and misled the netizens to cyberbully me?"
"Of course, I thought about it. Those internet trolls merely left some mean comments based on lies and false news. All you have to do is unplug the internet cable, and you would've been perfectly fine.
"Moreover, you can stay at home to look after Danica and my parents. Don't you see? It's the best of both worlds.
"As for Danica, she's still a lady at the end of the day. Even if her reputation is somehow ruined, she just has to find herself a wonderful husband in the future.
"Meanwhile, Yvonne is pregnant with a boy. He's destined for greatness. He's the one who will make our family proud. I can't allow the tiniest stain on his reputation!
"That said, you have nothing to worry about. I won't divorce you either. I will still make time to be with Danica and swing by once every weekend. I'll even give you three thousand dollars every month. That'll be enough for both your expenses."
I was completely disgusted listening to him. So, I tossed him the divorce agreement.
"I'll sign the letter of understanding, but not before you sign this first."
When Scott lowered his head and gazed at it, his face immediately turned red with rage.
"Whitney, you're out of your mind! How dare you divorce me?"
"That's right, I'm divorcing you! I want you out of my life!"
Hearing that, Scott grabbed me by the collar. He narrowed his eyes and grinned.
"Whitney, you cheated on me, didn't you? You're divorcing me because I got in the way!
"News flash, Whitney. A married couple is supposed to be loyal to each other, and yet you cheated on me, you unfaithful whore!
"Like mother, like daughter. I saw this coming a mile away. Your mom loved grinding herself against the old farts in the park. For all you know, you and your brothers don't share the same father either!
"And you, you're every bit as promiscuous and unfaithful as your late mother!"
"That's enough!" I shouted.
I shot to my feet, slapping Scott hard and fast in the face.
Holding his cheek, Scott flashed me a menacing smile. Before I knew it, he grabbed my hair, dragged me to the bed, and started humiliating me.
In a fit of panic, I grabbed my phone and tried to call the police, but he knocked it out of my hand.
"You are not escaping me tonight! That'll teach you to fool around with some guy. No one will ever want you again after this!" Scott snarled as he began to take my pants off.
My heart was filled with resentment as I roared and wailed, but he was completely undeterred.
Fortunately, Scott's phone rang, and Yvonee's soft, delicate voice came through. It was only then that he reluctantly left.
The door slammed behind him with a loud bang.
I lay curled on the bed, a smirk playing across my face. Reaching into my pocket, I took an audio recorder out and called my dad, Jason Sunderland.
"Dad, I need your help with this divorce case. I have evidence that the husband cheated and set the lady up. I want him to get absolutely nothing from this divorce."
