Chapter 12

Irene stayed up the entire night, so she just wanted to have a good sleep when she returned to Celestial Gardens. After parking her car, she did not take the elevator up. Firstly, it was because of the high temperature. No one knew when the power supply might fail. Secondly, she still thought that she was weak, so she would never say no to training her body. She ran up the stairs and washed up after getting home. Then, she plopped onto the bed and fell asleep. When she woke up, it was already three in the afternoon. After messing up her circadian rhythm, she was a little groggy when she woke up, but she still forced herself out of bed at the thought of a delicious rabbit pie. She washed her face and habitually took out the outdoor thermometer to measure the temperature. 73 degrees. Yesterday was only 71 degrees. She was not too surprised, because to her knowledge, the highest the temperature would go was 79 degrees. Irene went to the kitchen and began preparing ingredients for the rabbit pie. After she got all the ingredients, she cooked the filling in the pot before making the dough. Finally, she topped it off with some parsley, and the rabbit pie was served. She served some bread on the side and got a bottle of soda from the refrigerator. As she was about to turn on Game of Thrones, there was a knock on the door. Irene took a sip of her drink and frowned at the electric door switch. She regretted not turning on the switch when she came back this morning. Dan, who had been harassing her, was already dead. She did not know anyone else in Celestial Gardens, so who could it be? She walked over and opened the door. A bright smiling face appeared before her eyes, which took her by surprise. Was this not Jenny, who lived on the seventh floor? Irene narrowed her eyes in vigilance. Jenny tried to flatter Irene with a smile. “Miss, your cooking smells delicious. Do you mind if I eat with you? I almost vomited from all the instant noodles I had this week.” She looked like a self-absorbed, spoiled young lady, and she looked so innocent even when begging for food. It seemed like she had never been through any hardships in life. Irene had no intention of showing sympathy. She put her hand on the door frame and said coldly, “No.” Jenny inhaled deeply, and the smell of Irene’s cooking almost made her drool. “I can pay you. My father is the chairman of Jenson Group, so when my father returns to the country, I’ll make sure to repay you.” Irene did not budge. “I don’t need your money. Can you leave now?” She knew too well how precious food was, and she knew what troubles would follow if she fed this girl today. Jenny’s expression sunk, perhaps it was because no one had treated her like this before. She left with bloodshot eyes. Irene mercilessly closed the door. Jenny’s appearance made her vigilant, so she lost her appetite. Was she being too conspicuous when everyone else was eating instant noodles and biscuits? Irene did not want to stand out. She picked up her phone to read the messages in the group chat. Tall Jenny: [It smells so good. Who’s cooking? I really want to go have some, even if it’s just a bite. (picture)] Asparagus: [I almost vomited after having instant noodles for a week. Whose cooking smells this good? This is too much!] Seine Lover: [It seems to be coming from our building, but I’ve never heard of anyone in our building who can cook.] Tall Jenny: [It seems to be coming from the tenth floor. It smells too good I can’t stand it. I’m going up to have some.] Eugene Cohn: [Hey, the person who’s cooking, you’ve got yourself an angry crowd. You’d better hand over the food, or we’ll go get some ourselves.] Then, her entire screen showed people agreeing. Irene sneered. Only if they were able to get it, that was. She kept in mind to seal all the doors and windows tightly before cooking next time. After a satisfying meal, Irene lay down on the sofa and rubbed her belly while scrolling her phone. The Danver Islands were still uncontactable, and the volcano was still erupting. The temperature here continued to increase too. On the other hand, Merica was experiencing a once-in-a-millenium flood right now. Not only Merica, but the deserts that were dry all year round were experiencing severe floods too. People were still unbothered before this because they thought that it was just a short-term disaster, but now, the word ‘apocalypse’ had been repeatedly brought up. Countless people died in this disaster and committed suicide because they could not stand the extreme weather. There were experts who urged everyone to seek psychological counseling, and there were people spreading negativity around the internet. After realizing the negativity had gotten to her, Irene turned off her phone and stopped paying attention to the news. She touched her solid belly and looked at the things on her coffee table. Those were the things she got from Dan and the others last night Her eyes landed on a set of keys, and she fell into deep thought. Two minutes later, she used the keys to open the door to Dan’s house. The smell of smoke attacked her nostrils, causing Irene to cough twice. Dan’s house was decorated in a typical nouveau riche style with gold everywhere, which blinded Irene. There were perks to being nouveau riche, like that golden wood sofa that looked extravagant. Irene walked over and put it in the space. She walked around the living room and stuffed everything useful into the space before impatiently entering the study. Since Dan was an upstart tycoon, Irene guessed that there would be many treasures in his study that would surprise her. She expected to see treasures, but when she saw the precious jade on one wall of the study, she could not help but gulp. Out of nowhere, jade stones appeared for her to steal. Irene touched the jade stones with her fingers and collected them all in the space. Not only that, but she found a lot of gold bars and cash in the study too. What surprised her the most was that Dan had a full crate of guns! What puzzled Irene the most in her previous life was how Dan was able to become the overlord of the residence when he looked like he could not even fight. The box of guns and ammunition was her answer. What was Dan doing with so many guns? Then, Irene had a feeling that there was more to him than meets the eye. She had nothing to do anyway, so she would rather rummage through Dan’s study as she had a gut feeling that the answer would be in this room! After searching for a while, Irene found documents about the Golden Triangle and many young people’s resumes on Dan’s shelf. On the resumes, it clearly stated that these people were applying for that notorious human-trafficking organization! Dan was clearly the middleman who lured these people into that organization. Irene’s expression sank when she counted. There were more than 200 copies! Irene’s joy from obtaining the jade disappeared after learning this. Dan deserved to die!
