Chapter 13

At the thought of all the nasty things Dan had done, Irene helped herself by taking away everything in his house that was potentially useful. However, she did not take Dan’s phone, so she was not aware that not long after she left, his phone rang several times. In a large sea-view flat, several fierce-looking men gathered together and were smoking. Dave Hart called several times to no avail, so he started feeling uneasy. He stuffed the phone into his pocket and rubbed his face as he walked into the living room. He squatted in front of a man with a deep scar on his left cheek. “Quentin, something must’ve happened to my brother. I can’t get through all three of their phones.” “Tsk. Didn’t Dan say that those guys were tough? What are you worried about?” The man with the scar named Quentin pressed the cigarette butt into the ashtray. Dave’s tone was firm. “Trey’s phone is always with him, and it has been a day since he hasn’t responded to my message. Something must’ve happened to them.” Quentin lit another cigarette for himself and casually put his feet on the coffee table. “So what if something happened? I can’t go and find them. If I go out in this weather, I’ll die. Mention it again when the weather cools down.” At the thought of his elder brother, Dave said through gritted teeth, “Quentin, you don’t know this, but they had their eyes on a woman who sold three buildings in the Fort District two months ago. My brother did some investigating and found out that she sold them for two billion.” Quentin’s eyes narrowed when he mentioned two billion, and he sat up a little straighter. “Tell me the details.” After Dave finished explaining, Quentin took a puff of his cigarette and murmured, “Irene Fulmer. Very well, I’ll remember this name.” … After returning from Dan’s home, Irene went to the gym to train. There were already so many dirty things going on in this peaceful era, so there would only be much more of these things in the apocalypse. She had no power to save the world, so all she could do was protect herself and stick to her principles. Halfway through boxing, she heard a loud bang. It was immediately followed by a shrill cry from downstairs. She drew her eyebrows together and wiped off her sweat with a towel. She walked to the window and lifted the curtain to take a look. She saw a Mercedes Benz bursting into flames after crashing into a green fence at the gate of the residence. A man was struggling to open the car door, and he was screaming as he crawled out. Not even two steps later, he stopped moving, The hand Irene was wiping her sweat with paused as she squinted to look at the man on the ground. Lying on the ground in this weather would give him a second-degree burn. She wanted to see what happened next. Irene took out her binoculars and stood by the window as she watched closely. Not long after, a middle-aged couple ran over with sun hats and umbrellas. They picked up the unconscious man who was lying on the ground and hurried into Building 1. Irene assumed that the group chat would be discussing this. She came out of the gym and started reading new messages from the group. Tall Jenny: [What’s going on? Why are people still going outside in this hot weather? Is that guy okay?] Seine Lover: [I heard that his factory caught fire due to the temperature, so he went out to check on it. It seems like his car hit the fence because his tire blew up from the heat. I hope he’s doing okay.] Bean Bean: [It’s 73 degrees today, and he still drove? Is he that crazy about money?] Eugene Cohn: [Wasn’t there another car driving out this morning? I saw clearly that it was a black Hummer, but I don’t know who it belongs to.] Irene was taken aback by that message. It seemed like she was attracting too much attention. If she got targeted two more times, she might become famous in her neighborhood. Irene had been staying home the past few days without going out to buy supplies, so it seemed like she had to follow the crowd and go out tonight. The temperature went down at nightfall, so when it was 11 or 12 o’clock at night, the temperature was below 50 degrees. Quite a lot of people chose to go out at this time, so Irene changed and went down the stairs with her car keys. When she got to the seventh floor, a fluffy head popped up out of nowhere. Irene was so startled she almost drew out a weapon. It was just Jenny. She was wearing a T-shirt, denim shorts, and a pair of sneakers. She looked very energetic with her smiling eyes. After realizing that it was her, Irene dropped her guard, but not completely. She put her fingers into her pocket and pinched the switchblade. Then, she frowned and looked at Jenny vigilantly. “What are you doing?” “Relax, I’m not going to do anything to you. I know that you drove the black Hummer out this morning, but I won’t tell anyone.” Jenny raised her hands and approached Irene. Irene scowled and said softly, “What are you trying to do?” “Are you going to buy supplies? Can I come with you? I’m running out of food, and I’m scared to be alone.” Jenny pointed her fingers at each other and pouted pitifully at Irene. Irene never liked cute and coy behavior, so she refused firmly, “No.” After that, Irene went downstairs on her own. Soon, she heard someone trotting down the stairs. It was Jenny running down with her car keys. She snorted angrily and complained, “You’re cruel.” Irene did not care what others thought of her, so she walked away with her long legs. When she got to the parking lot, she drove out of there in her black Hummer. In the rearview mirror, she saw that Jenny was following her in a red Ferrari and honked at her. Irene had not met such an energetic person in a long time. Everyone would turn into zombies after living in an apocalypse for too long, but even zombies would yearn for some brightness in their life. She slowly reduced the speed of her car. Jenny opened the car window and made faces at Irene before driving past her. Irene frowned. She did not remember knowing Jenny in her previous life. Was it because she did not survive the extreme heat, or was it some other reason? Suddenly, she remembered Jenny saying that she was the daughter of the chairman of Jenson Group. Then, she recalled in her previous life that Dan had mentioned more than once that he had imprisoned the daughter of Jenson Group’s chairman in his bedroom so that he and his gang could take turns having fun with her, but when one of them failed to keep a close eye on her, she jumped to her death. It was a tragic way for such a vivid life to end. Fortunately, Dan had died in this lifetime, so Jenny did not have to suffer such disgrace. When she came back to her senses, Irene turned the steering wheel and was about to drive into the shopping mall, but she caught a glimpse of a little yellow animal howling beside a flowerbed. She then took a closer look and… Goodness, was that a tiger?
