The sleek Lincoln purred through the streets of Faellac Town, its tinted windows shutting out the noise of the city—but not the echo in my head. Once again. The phrase gnawed at me, souring every shallow breath I took.
Damien hadn't spoken since we left the council hall. His silence was as heavy as the Elders' judgment, and it left me drowning in my own questions. Had there really been another before me? Was I nothing but a contract signed in ink where someone else's name should have been?
I glanced at him. Stone-cut features, obsidian eyes unreadable, jaw set like he could carry the weight of the world without flinching. He was every inch the Alpha the world revered.
