#Chapter 313: Last Ditch

“Get that final draft to me today, Karl. We’re running out of time.”
Sarah’s voice comes through the phone, a little sharper than usual. I don’t blame her, though.
With the press conference to announce the election in just two days, we’re on a bit of a time crunch; and it’s partially my fault, because I haven’t exactly been the fastest speech writer ever.
I nod to myself, even though I know she can’t see me. “I’ll get right on that, Sarah,” I say.
“Oh, and don’t forget the portion about the security budget,” she adds. “People want numbers, not just platitudes.”
“Right. Will do. Thanks,” I reply before the line goes dead.
With a sigh, I toss my phone down on my desk and lean back in my chair. My desk is scattered with documents, everything from my usual Alpha duties—trade agreements, peace treaty updates, business contracts—to the election-related stuff.
