The steady roar of waves echoed behind us as I led Agnes back to the shore, Thea darting ahead with boundless energy.
We had come to the beach to escape the endless comments and criticisms on social media, the sneering responses to Agnes’s ideas and our relationship. Yet here, amidst the calm ocean and Thea’s infectious laughter, something between Agnes and me had cracked open, revealing the raw nerve of our connection.
It unsettled me as much as it drew me in.
By the time we reached the resort, Thea was pleading to explore the casino’s vibrant kid-friendly area. Eager to see her excitement, I agreed, leading her into the main lobby while Agnes held back, her eyes darting away from mine.
