“So what if he took the book?”
Edward was helped onto the sofa, his movements slow but his voice firm.
“He took them to give to relatives. That’s filial piety, not a crime.”
Evan immediately moved closer, crouching beside him with an eager smile.
“Dad, you always understand me best.”
Edward patted Evan’s head with a trembling hand, his expression indulgent.
“When Dominic arrives later, I’ll handle it. You don’t need to worry about anything.”
Relief flashed across Evan’s face. He quickly poured hot water, adjusted the cushions, and fussed over Edward with exaggerated care, as if afraid the old man might change his mind.
Behind them, Margaret watched silently.
The fear that had lingered on her face earlier vanished. Her lips curved upward, slow and deliberate, and a cold, murderous glint passed through her eyes.
While Evan’s attention was firmly fixed on Edward, Margaret turned and slipped quietly toward the backyard.
The moment she stepped inside, the stench hit her.
