Sloane forced herself to stay calm, suppressing the growl clawing at her throat. “Ethan, let’s go.”
The crowd of wolves that had gathered, hungry for drama, began to disperse now that the confrontation seemed finished.
“Wait!”
Lyra’s sharp voice cut through the night, halting Sloane mid-step.
“Sloane, you owe Caleb an apology.”
Sloane almost laughed. An apology? After she’d just hauled a pup out of danger?
She turned, eyes flashing gold for a second. “Do you hear yourself?”
Lyra gave a cold snort, arms folded. “If you hadn’t been so busy worrying about someone else’s pup, Caleb wouldn’t have fallen.”
Sloane blinked. Really? Pin the blame on her?
Caleb broke into tears again, his small frame shaking, the sound cutting straight through the pack’s collective nerves.
Lyra’s expression twisted into a mask of wounded drama. “I get it, you want to play the hero. But Caleb’s still your blood. How could you turn your back on your own son just to rescue another wolf’s pup?”
