Three days later.
When Damon came to fetch Caleb for discharge, the television in the hospital lobby was broadcasting breaking society news, the heir of the Brown family, Nick, was hosting a grand banquet that evening.
Damon’s brow furrowed. He hadn’t received an invitation.
For a fleeting second, irritation flared, until he reminded himself that he and Nick were close enough not to need one.
He turned to Lyra, who was helping Caleb button his jacket. “Lyra, take Caleb home first. I have an appointment.”
Lyra froze.
Her delicate fingers stiffened against the child’s collar as she looked up at him. “Damon, you’re not fully recovered. You should rest. Can’t it wait?”
Damon’s tone was cold, the edge of authority in it. “No. It’s business. The company needs this connection.”
That was a lie and Lyra knew it. She could smell the faint bitterness beneath his calm, the scent of agitation only another wolf could detect. He wasn’t going for work. He was restless. Angry.
