Chapter 14
Emily stood quietly between the bookshelves in the law firm's archive room. Her fingertips lingered on an old, yellow case file.
Five years ago, the Marcus Reed homicide case was the first criminal defense case she had taken on when she began practicing on her own.
The defendant, Marcus Reed, had stabbed his coworker to death during a dispute at a construction site. He was sentenced to death during his first trial.
Later, Emily fought with all her might to get Marcus' sentence reduced to life with reprieve. But after the verdict, he choked her as he threatened, "You bitch, if I have to die in prison, I'll make sure to haunt you after!"
Today, she was staring at the case file once again because Marcus had murdered a prison guard in jail. During his second trial, it was upheld that he would be sentenced to death. However, he had filed for an appeal.
Emily closed the file and said to her assistant, "I'll personally handle this case."
