Chapter 20
When Emily received news of Victor's critical condition, it was her third day at the international courthouse.
At the moment, she had just finished a seven-hour court session to obtain huge compensation for fishermen whose business was suffering from a multinational corporation's pollution.
Once Emily walked out of the courthouse, Imelda hurriedly handed her a phone. There was a brief message on the screen.
"Mr. Smith's old injuries got infected again. The doctors say he's in critical condition."
Emily paused for a moment but quickly resumed her normal self. She locked her phone before calmly informing Imelda to arrange for a flight back home.
It was late at night when she received a letter in her hotel room. The envelope was plain white, yet his handwriting was terribly familiar.
Emily stared at his signature for a long time before slowly opening the envelope.
