Chapter 6

The phone stopped vibrating, but after a second, it started vibrating again. It didn't look like the caller was going to relent. Wendy was afraid that it had something to do with his business affairs. She pressed the answer button, but before she asked, the already dissatisfied voice complained, "Brian, why weren't you answering the phone? You left your watch last night, it's here. Why don't you come to my place later to pick it up?" The lie Wendy had told herself was wiped out in an instant. Kirsten didn't hear anything for a long time and she immediately went on the defensive. "Who are you?" Her voice was like a female leopard whose territory was being invaded by others. Soon after, there was an arrogant tone, "Wendy, is that you? It must be you! Brian stayed over last night and he did me in a position you can't imagine. What's wrong? Cat got your tongue? If you understand then go get divorced already and leave us alone!" Wendy squeezed the phone tightly, her fingers were faintly white. After a long time, she finally hung up the call. When she turned around, Brian was leaning against the door frame of the kitchen, looking at her with a blank stare. Wendy looked at him. He looked tired, but that didn't ruin his handsome face. She couldn't help but feel sad, Irma said that he was looking for her all night, but he just went to Kirsten. His watch being missing from his arm only served as evidence. She gave a deep sigh. She forced a smile on her lips, and handed the phone over. "Kirsten called, your watch is with her." But Brian didn't reach out to take it, he just stared straight at Wendy, with an emotionless expression. Wendy couldn't bear staying in the same room with him. She put his phone on the sink and walked out of the kitchen nonchalantly. When she went upstairs, she ran into Irma, who was poking her head out the door. When she saw her coming up, she was stunned. "Why are you up here already? Brian hasn't eaten yet and he still has work later. Can—" "He will find something to eat when he is hungry." Wendy interrupted her, she turned around and went in her room. She locked the door behind her. After sleeping for a while, she woke up in the afternoon. When Wendy looked in the mirror, she found that her eyes were swollen and her face was pale. She was crying in her sleep. She lowered her head and her gaze fell on the ring on her left ring finger. The style was very ordinary, but the diamond on it was a big one. She should feel happy remembering those times with him, the time when he first proposed. She only felt pain and bitterness as she thought about it now. After freshening up, Wendy went downstairs. It was very quiet. The afterglow of the setting sun shined on the left side of the villa, which cast a brilliant shadow on the ground. On the table to the left, there was a bouquet of bright red roses with a few water droplets on the petals and a gift box with exquisite packaging. It looked dazzling in the orange light of the sun. Wendy held her breath, and she slowly walked towards the table involuntarily. A low voice stopped her with perfect timing, "Where did you go last night?" Wendy turned her head and she saw Brian coming out of the bathroom on the other side. His chin was smooth, his hair was docile, and a straight suit made his slender figure taller. His eyes were as deep as a quiet night. Wendy could feel her heart beat harder, and her voice became a little obscure, "I went to Ruby's place last night. Brian, the flowers and gifts on the table—" Brian paused as he was fixing up his tie. He interrupted her with a frown on his face, "When I went home last night, I happened to run into Timothy Lu, Ruby was in his car." His eyes then looked over to her inquiringly. "I didn't see you in his car." Wendy stiffened up, she suddenly remembered that she was sent to the hotel by a strange man last night. Although nothing happened between the two of them, it was difficult to explain properly. She felt a little guilty, she didn't want to him to misunderstand. "Ruby was drunk. I was embarrassed to ride with her in Dr. Lu's car, so I hailed myself a taxi." "Where did you go? Mr. Lu's apartment?" Brian's eyes became colder. Wendy realized that she had dug a hole for herself. Brian knew from the beginning that she wasn't staying with Ruby at all, and he waited quietly for her give herself away. She felt a little uncomfortable when she realized his plan. She bit her lip and said in a sincere tone, "I drank too much and I stayed at a nearby hotel last night." Brian's eyes looked into hers, and his voice was stern, "Wendy, you're still my wife. I don't want to hear any rumors about you or me." Brian tidied up his clothes, he took the roses and the gift box, and walked towards the door without looking back. Wendy was taken aback. "Brian, where are you going so late?" Brian didn't stop, he walked to the hallway to put on his shoes. As he opened the door he said lazily, "Take care of yourself. Lock the doors, mom went to a friend's house, so she won't be back tonight." Wendy clenched her fist until her nails dug into her palm, but the pain she felt in her hand was incomparable to the suffocation she could feel in her heart. "What about you? Aren't you coming back?" Wendy knew she shouldn't have asked but she still wanted to ask anyway.
