Chapter 7

Brian went out without stopping. The door closed, and there was a faint fragrance in the air. She stayed in the hall for a while, she was wondering if the scent was just an illusion. The air conditioning was left on and soon after she was shivering. It took a little while longer for her to realize it. She pulled her clothes closer to her body and she went back to her room. The woman in the mirror was like a flower that decayed before it was given a chance to bloom. On their first year anniversary she was all alone in a cold room. Her husband left with roses in hand for another woman. All she had were her thoughts. She remembered her past self all those years ago. She wondered what her life would be like if she wasn't in this hopeless tomb of a marriage Her thoughts were interrupted with a sudden phone call. Wendy decided to ignore it but the same unfamiliar number kept calling. She gave in and answered the phone. She expected a man, but a woman was on the other side. "Hello, is this Ms. Wendy Su?" Wendy thought about it for a few seconds. "Yes, who is this?" "I am the Personnel Manager of the Shengyang Group. We read the résumé you submitted through our website and I'm glad to inform you that you have an interview at our company tomorrow at nine o'clock in the morning." Wendy was a little surprised that the Shenyang Group wanted an interview with her. The Shengyang Group was a large company that originated in the United States. In recent years, it has slowly shifted its focus in China. Compared to the Gu Group, the Shengyang Group was notoriously picky with its business affairs. When she worked as a financial assistant in Gu, she often heard her colleagues make wishes in vain. They said that if they could work at Shengyang for at least two years, any other company would hire them in a heartbeat. Wendy knew the scope of her ability and she also knew that Shengyang was a prestigious group. She considered it for a few seconds, but she ultimately decided not to submit a résumé to Shengyang. "Ms. Su, please bring your credentials and materials tomorrow, we will have someone to interview you at nine o'clock. Ms. Su, are you still there?" "Uh, yes," Wendy recovered. "Is nine o'clock inconvenient?" Wendy's purpose of going to work in the first place was exactly what Brian said. At that time, she felt very secure in her future, but she still found some excitement in her work after a year. She felt like it was breath of fresh air in her otherwise dull and pampered way of living. After resigning at Gu's, she submitted résumé to various companies and a few websites. The Shengyang Group must have seen her résumé through one of the sites she submitted on. Wendy breathed a sigh of relief and she reassured the caller, "No problem, I'll be there on time at nine o'clock tomorrow morning." Wendy suddenly felt nervous. She sorted out her documents in a hurry, she then realized that she only had a few copies of her résumé and a diploma. She decided to research about Shengyang through the internet and she didn't fall asleep until she was absolutely sure she had everything. At night, Wendy had a dream. In her dream, she came to Shengyang's building. She was in the hallway waiting for the interview, it was crowded with people who were also waiting for an interview. Someone called her and she followed them anxiously into the room. The room was brightly lit, and the air-conditioning was turned up to the max. The door of the room automatically closed with a click behind her. Her heart jumped when she heard it, but she turned around to see a man looking at her. There was a thick fog covering his face, but she could clearly see his eyes. She thought they looked familiar. At this time, a middle-aged woman, who let herself in, informed her, "President Gu will be the one to interview you today." Wendy was stunned. The thick fog covering his face had dispersed and Brian's stern face gradually became clear. He gave her a mocking smile. "Didn't you already resign from the company? Why are you back already?" Wendy wanted to speak out, but she couldn't say anything. Her throat felt like it was getting choked. "Wendy, you really love me to death. It's a pity, I don't love you!" His figure got closer and closer and closer. As he approached she could hear a sharp ringing sound coming from lips. The sound of her alarm woke her up from her nightmare. Wendy gasped, she opened her eyes and realized it was just a bad dream. She slowly closed her eyes to drift back asleep, but before she fell asleep she quickly opened her eyes again and checked the time on her phone. It was eight o'clock. Wendy was stuck at the intersection and she looked down at her watch irritably. It was already eight forty, but there was a long line of cars in front of her. She realized that she was going to be late no matter what, so she decided to calm down instead. She looked out the window and she casually glanced at the poster on the wall. It was an advertisement for wedding rings. The woman on the poster was very beautiful. Wendy's gaze shifted to the text which was at the bottom of the poster. It read, "A warm welcome to our queen, Kimberly Song." Her pupils shrank for a moment. When the green light came on, Wendy glanced at the poster one last time. She started the car and went along with the traffic. When she stood in front of the elevator door, it was already 8:55.
