Chapter 12
After leaving the law office, Heidi headed straight to a real estate agency to start house-hunting.
Ashford's prices were outrageous. The money she had on hand was barely enough to cover the down payment on a one-bedroom in a less-than-desirable part of town.
The realtor rambled on endlessly, but Heidi didn't catch a word. Her mind was in a mess.
On the third day, Heidi was sitting on the couch, scrolling through a rental app on her phone.
Nelson, lounging nearby, daintily handed her a peeled apple.
"Have you decided yet? Are you really going to move out on your own?"
"Yeah."
"Do you have enough money? I can chip in."
Heidi bit into the apple and mumbled, "I've got it."
The hard-earned savings she had were all hers. She hadn't touched the card Maverick gave her.
She didn't want his money, and she sure as hell didn't want anything tying her to him anymore.
The doorbell rang, and Nelson grinned. He practically skipped to the door. "Bet it's Ashton forgetting the code again."
