Chapter 13

Maverick's voice was low and frustrated, which was all too familiar to Heidi. "Stop moving." He carried her with ease, his expression unreadable as he pressed the elevator button. With her face pressed against his shoulder, Heidi felt her tears threaten to spill from her eyes. She thought back to senior year, when he had carried her out of the club like this after she had too much to drink at the graduation party. Back then, he was way more careful, with one hand supporting her back and the other cradling her head. His voice had been soft as he murmured, "Now, now. Settle down." But now? Maverick even scolded her. She stopped struggling, letting him carry her like a sack of potatoes down the stairs. Then, he shoved her into the passenger seat. The car door slammed shut, and after they had driven a little way, Maverick finally asked, "Why didn't you pick up my calls?" Hearing no response, he tried again. "I've been looking for you for two days." There was a hint of melancholy
