The car wound its way up the hillside, the surroundings growing quieter. Maverick tried to break the silence. "The seminar went well today." Heidi offered a noncommittal hum. "I have to go to Wlynen next week for three days. There's a traffic management conference." Another hum. "I was thinking, since I'm free the next couple of days, I could take you to visit your parents. Didn't you promise you'd go back?" His question finally got a reaction. Heidi had promised Rachel she'd visit, but she hadn't planned on bringing Maverick. But then again, showing up alone would only invite more worry and endless questions. "Which day? I'll let them know," she said. "The day after tomorrow." Maverick mentally ran through his schedule and added, "I'll wrap up a few cases at the station tomorrow. Some paperwork needs to be filed.
