Chapter 15

“Okay, I got it. It’s late now. Time is precious. Go and accompany your girlfriend.” Dalia could not stop smiling. She happily hung up. Her son was healthy, but he insisted on pretending to be ill. Besides that, he always showed a cold expression. Other men were sexy and charming, while he acted cool on a wheelchair. He was nearly thirty years old, yet he was not ready to get married. She was always worried about this. Now, she did not need to be worried anymore. She really wondered about the woman who made her son fall in love. Dalia was very curious, so she decided to come up with a way to see her future daughter-in-law. Maeve made two plates of pasta and placed them on the table. When she saw that Matthew had hung up, she said to him, “The pasta is ready. Go wash your hands and come have some.” “I don’t eat supper. Eating late makes it easy to gain weight.” Matthew rejected her offer, but he still pulled the chair out and sat opposite of Maeve. Maeve narrowed her eyes and looked at him. She lamented. “No wonder you have such a good figure. It turns out that men also care about figures.” Matthew snorted. His figure was naturally good. He did not need her comment. Perhaps, all she longed for from the start was his body. Maeve opened a can of chili paste and asked, “Are you really not eating?” “Nope.” Matthew was very resolute. When he saw that there were only soft-boiled eggs and broccoli without onions in the pasta on his plate, his expression brightened slightly. It looked like she remembered his preferences. Maeve added two spoonfuls of chili paste into her pasta before she started eating. She had a small appetite, so a small plate of pasta was enough for her. Matthew sat across from her all this time, and he looked like he wanted to say something. Maeve was already used to his cold attitude. She asked, “Was it your mother who called you just now?” “Yes,” Matthew answered coldly. The relationship between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law was always complicated. She had also heard a lot of examples of poor relationships between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law. Matthew said he could handle that, but Maeve was still slightly worried. She was scared that her mother-in-law would not like her. Matthew patiently waited for her to finish eating, but she still had yet to bring up the struggles she encountered at work. In the end, he had to bring it up. He asked, “How was work today?” “It’s quite good. I sold fifty thousand dollars’ worth of clothes today. I earned about one thousand dollars from the commission alone.” When Maeve thought of the huge amount of commission, she was so happy that her eyes shone brightly. She also knew that Luna, Amy, and Rhea just wanted to insult her. They wanted to see her groveling and flattering them, and they wanted to revel in a sense of superiority. However, she did not think being polite to the customers was equivalent to groveling. Yvonne came to buy clothes, so she was her customer. Luna and the gang were also her customers. She was a sales assistant. Providing a good shopping experience for her customers was called professionalism. She was not lowering her status and groveling. “That’s all?” Matthew raised his eyebrows. Maeve misunderstood what he meant, and she said, “It’s a very high amount for individual sales, okay?” “Okay, apart from that, did anything else happen?” Matthew indirectly asked. “Anything else?” Maeve thought for a while. Then, she thought of that jerk, Ron. After spending some time with him over the past few days, Maeve roughly knew her husband’s character. He was cold yet domineering and overbearing. He was unhappy when she compared him to other men. If she talked about her ex-boyfriend to him, he would be furious. “Nothing else happened. Oh yeah, there’s also some good news. The shop manager said my performance has been good. She did not look into the fact that I have a criminal record, so I should be able to become a permanent staff member next month. After I become a permanent staff member, my salary will be higher.” Maeve did not care about the incident with Ron. When she thought about securing her job, her mood improved. She could save more money every month. Then, she could take out a portion of her salary and use it for their living expenses. She could help manage the household and improve their life. When Matthew saw that she did not mention Ron, he felt that she must have an ulterior motive. His expression turned cold as he stood up. “I didn’t eat just now, so you can do the dishes yourself.” After he spoke, he turned around and went back to his room. He walked away coldly without turning back. What was wrong? Did she make him angry? She reflected and surmised that she had not done anything too terrible. Maeve directly said to him, “Mr. Scott, are you angry at me? Did I do anything wrong? If I do or say anything wrong, you can tell me. If you’re right, I can change. We are married, so communication is very important. If there’s a problem and we don’t communicate and solve it, there will be more and more feuds and misunderstandings. Our miscommunication issues might cause us to draw the wrong conclusions, and we won’t be able to live together anymore.” “Okay.” Matthew turned around and looked down at Maeve. “I’ll ask you now. Did you meet Ron Stevens today?” Maeve was slightly surprised. “How did you know that Ron and I met?” “My colleague saw it. You went to my company today, and many of the staff recognized you. On his way back after work, he saw you and Ron together, so he thought that you were cheating on me,” Matthew said sarcastically. “I’m just a driver, so I can’t be compared to the rich son from the Stevens family. If you still have feelings for him, you can just tell me. I’ll let you be with him.” Maeve understood what her husband meant, and her expression instantly became serious. She took a deep breath and explained, “I ran into that jerk, Ron, today. However, he was the one who came to pester me after he saw Rhea’s Instagram post. I already made it clear to him, and I won’t get involved with that kind of b*stard again.” “If he pestered you, why didn’t you tell me?” Matthew’s handsome face was still cold. “You’re a woman, and you clocked off work so late. Do you know that it’s very dangerous?” “I thought that I could handle it, so I didn’t tell you. Besides, you were so angry when I compared you with other men. I was afraid that if I talked about my ex-boyfriend, you would be unhappy. I thought you might misunderstand and think I was still involved with him. If I still had any feelings for Ron, I wouldn’t have agreed to marry you.” Matthew’s expression slowly brightened. When Maeve saw that, she held back her laughter and asked, “Mr. Scott, are you worried about me? Are you jealous?” “You’re overthinking. I’m not jealous,” Matthew answered indifferently. “I just hope that you can be careful. If you have any doubts, you don’t have to hide it. I’ll make it happen for you.” When Maeve saw his prideful look, she smiled and said, “I don’t have any doubts. I just want to have a good life with you and find my grandmother.” Maeve really did not like Ron anymore. Three years ago, the moment she was taken to Riverside Police Station, she stopped liking Ron. When she saw Ron on the day of her sentencing, she hated him so much. When Maeve thought of her grandmother, she felt gloomy. She said, “Rest assured, there’s really nothing between Ron and me anymore. It’s late now. Please go up to rest. I’ll do the dishes.” Maeve cleaned the plates and went to the kitchen. Then, she took the lunch box that he placed near the entrance to the kitchen too. Matthew looked away and strode into his room. After he closed the door, he immediately took out his phone and contacted Liam.
