Chapter 16

Liam was about to fall asleep when he heard his boss’ exclusive ringtone. The fog left behind from his sleep immediately disappeared from his mind. He immediately sat up on his bed and tapped on the Answer Call button. “Hi, Mr. Stevens.” “Get a few men to beat Ron up. That b*stard needs a lesson.” Matthew’s cold voice was filled with murderous intent. “Okay. To which extent do you want me to teach Ron a lesson?” Liam was aware that Matthew wanted to take revenge for Maeve. Ron was, after all, a member of the Stevens family, as well as Matthew’s eldest nephew. Therefore, it was best for Liam to know how far should he go in “teaching Ron a lesson.” Matthew said coolly, “Make sure he’s hospitalized for two months.” “Got it.” Liam immediately got up to execute Matthew’s order. He thought. “Mr. Stevens cares about his wife more than I expected. He doesn’t even notice that he’s gradually falling for her.” ...... It was about 11:00 p.m., and Hemmington was at its liveliest. The city bustled with activity, and the people enjoyed their lives. Ron walked out of the bar with a group of friends behind him. There were two black MPVs by the roadside not far from them. When the people inside saw Ron show up, a dozen tall men in black suits got out of the cars and charged at him. Ron started cursing up a storm when his path was blocked. “F*ck off! Do you know who I am? How dare you get in my way?!” “You’re Young Master Ron.” The head of the bodyguards stared at Ron. The corners of Ron’s lips curled up slightly. He glared at the muscular bodyguard who was much taller than him and said impatiently, “Since you know who I am, f*ck off now!” “Sorry.” “What do you mean? Are you asking for trouble?” “Let’s get him!” The bodyguard punched Ron with an iron-like fist. “W-Who are you? I’m from the Stevens family. What the hell?!” Ron cradled his head and yelped in pain. When Ron’s friends saw the sight, they did not dare to go over and help him. Ron was a member of the Stevens family. Even so, these people did not seem to be afraid of offending the Stevens family. His friends wondered where these men came from. Although Ron’s friends came from prominent families, their families were not as great as Ron’s. If they were to help him, they would only be asking for trouble. So, they thought it was wise to stay out of trouble to ensure their own safety at that moment. Ron was struck violently. He stopped yelling at them and begged for mercy instead. “Boss, I’m sorry. Please show me some mercy. Boss…” After he screamed for some time, the bodyguards thought they had beaten him up enough, so they stopped. Ron’s bones were crushed as a result of the beating. He curled up on the ground. He was in so much pain that he could not get up. He struggled to say, “How exactly have I offended you all? I should at least be told the reason why I was beaten up.” “I was told to pass you a message.” “What is it?” “Before you flirt with someone, you ought to understand that some people are out of your league. Breaking your bones is just a warning. Do this again, and you won’t be as lucky!” After he finished saying that, the men left with great haste. Ron was in so much pain that his forehead broke out in cold sweat. He cussed while still feeling baffled, “F*ck! Who the f*ck did I offend?!” After Liam received the video sent by the bodyguards, he watched it and confirmed that everything went smoothly. He then forwarded the video to Matthew. “Mr. Stevens, the matter is settled according to your instructions.” Matthew replied to him briefly, “Okay.” …… In the following days, Ron stopped showing up in front of Maeve. Maeve was worried by Ron’s constant appearance. She was worried that he would come to make a big fuss in her shop and make her lose her job, which she had taken great pains to get. However, it seemed like Ron had said those words on a whim, or perhaps he said that just to humiliate her. Just then, Yolanda came over with the job schedule and said loudly, “Everyone, please come over here. We have a new member, so I need to rearrange our schedules. The new one for this month has already been released. Maeve, tomorrow will be a rest day for you.” “Okay. Thank you, Ms. Sullivan.” A week flew by as Maeve worked in the shop. She had been waiting for so long, and yet she received no news about her grandmother from the police officer. She wondered if her grandmother was still alive. At that moment, Maeve’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She did not want to miss any opportunity of receiving her grandmother’s news. Hence, she excused herself and went to the washroom to answer the call. “Hello.” “It’s me.” Maeve heard her husband’s magnetic voice from the other end of the line. Maeve’s eyes dulled in disappointment. However, she soon regained her composure. “Mr. Scott, why did you call me at this moment? Did something happen?” “Huh?” Matthew frowned. “Does that mean I can call you only when something happens?” Noticing that he was a little upset, Maeve quickly said, “That’s not what I meant.” Matthew replied to her coolly, “It’s true that I called you because I have something to tell you. Didn’t I mention that I would find an opportunity to discuss with Mr. Stevens and seek his help regarding your grandmother’s issue a couple of days ago?” “Yes. What did Mr. Stevens say?” asked Maeve anxiously. At the time, he only mentioned it briefly, but she did not dare take it to heart, and later she did not dare to ask again, afraid that he would be under pressure. Moreover, Maeve’s husband was just a driver. Although he shared the same surname as Matthew, he was not a member of the Stevens family and had no blood relationship with Matthew. Mr. Stevens was a busy man. Maeve thought he would not have the time to bother about his subordinate’s family issues. But her husband had brought up the subject to her once again. Maeve believed there must have been progress with the issue. She looked forward to it, and her heart raced with anticipation. “Yes. They’ve found her. She’s at Starlet Police Station where you reported the case. You can go there and confirm if she’s your grandmother.” “Really?” Maeve was extremely excited. “I’ll go right away!” She quickly returned to the shop. When Yolanda noticed Maeve’s panicked and nervous expression, she asked with concern, “Maeve, what is it? Did something happen?” Maeve briefly told Yolanda about her grandmother’s case. After Yolanda heard her story, she immediately said, “What are you waiting for? Go there and have a look. You don’t have to come back to work for the rest of the day.” Maeve took her bag and was ready to leave. She paused for a moment when she was at the entrance. “Ms. Sullivan, if I leave early today, will you deduct my full attendance bonus?” Yolanda glared at her. “I won’t deduct it. Go now.” “Thank you, Ms. Sullivan.” Maeve rushed over to Starlet Police Station as fast as she could. ...... Unlike the previous time, the police officers treated her politely. Thanks to Mr. Stevens, even the chief came out to greet her. “Ms. Lawson, I’m Michael Zuckberg, the chief of Starlet Police Station. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Zuckberg. Where is my grandma?” She looked forward to it, and her heart raced with anticipation. “Ms. Lawson, she’s resting in the lounge. This way, please. I’ll bring you to her.” “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. It is my pleasure to work for Young Master Stevens.” Maeve was not able to find any clues despite her hard work. Mr. Stevens, on the other hand, solved the issue effortlessly by just giving a single order. He was the epitome of a successful man who stood at the top of the food chain in this world. Maeve felt grateful and lamented the fact that she could never reach his heights, but she did not continue dwelling on that. Other than that, she did not ponder the issue further. She followed Michael, and they soon reached the lounge. “Grandma!” The moment Maeve saw her grandmother, tears streamed uncontrollably down her face. She rushed over and hugged her grandmother. “Grandma, it’s you! I finally found you! I thought I would never see you again. I thought I was going to become an orphan.” Agatha looked like a completely different person. She had lost weight, her hair had turned white, and her clothes were unkempt. She smelled bad because she had not had a shower in a long time. Something was amiss with her expression. She looked like she was in a daze and did not look as optimistic and gentle as she used to.
