Chapter 12

Seeing that neither Kylie nor Isaac was speaking up, Rachel quickly asked nervously, "What's wrong? Why aren't you two saying anything? Don't tell me you really were thinking about getting a divorce? I-I—" Before she could finish her sentence, she started breathing rapidly again, her breaths sounding heavy and strained. Isaac panicked and hurriedly spoke up to reassure her. "We weren't, Grandma! We've never thought about getting divorced! Don't panic and breathe slowly." Upon hearing this, Kylie glanced intently at Isaac. She knew very well that Isaac had only said that to appease Rachel. Just then, Rachel called out to her again. "Kylie." "Rachel," she answered in reply. Rachel held onto her hand tightly. "You're the only daughter-in-law I'll acknowledge. You must tell me if Isaac ever bullies you, and I'll help you teach him a lesson!" Rachel's words warmed Kylie's heart. She felt incredibly grateful toward Rachel, but… she had really thought things through now. No matter how hard she worked, something that didn't belong to her would never become hers, and there was no forcing relationships. However, she had no choice but to say something contrary to her actual thoughts in order to appease Rachel right now. "Don't worry, Grandma. Isaac didn't bully me, and we're getting along quite well." Rachel smiled. "That's good." Perhaps because Rachel was really tired, she soon fell asleep again. Once she had fallen asleep, they all left the room. "I have something to say to Kylie, Mom, so we'll be heading back to our room first," Isaac said before reaching out to grab Kylie's hand. He happened to grab her left hand, which made her let out a quiet cry of pain. Startled, Isaac looked down at her hand. Kylie looked rather pale, but she didn't say anything. Instead, she walked past him and headed straight for their shared bedroom. Isaac's eyes darkened a little, but after two seconds of hesitation, he stuck his hands in his pockets and followed after her. As soon as they entered the room and closed the door, Isaac asked, "What's with your injuries?" His voice was low, hoarse, and carried a hint of some indiscernible emotion. Kylie sighed softly before replying in a calm voice, "It's nothing you need to worry about, Mr. Grant." Isaac frowned. After a few seconds, he took a deep breath. "Let's put our divorce on hold for now." The expression on her face did not change when she heard that, and she simply commented, "Let's just go through the formalities first, but we won't tell Rachel just yet. I'll play along with your act." Isaac glanced at her. "Grandma had an asthma attack the moment we stepped foot into the courthouse. She also told us all that immediately after she woke up and spotted us. Have you ever thought about the reason why?" Kylie was startled. He continued without waiting for her to react, "Grandma must have an acquaintance working there, so she'll definitely know if we go there." After pondering in silence for a while, she responded quietly, "I'll find the time to clarify things with Rachel." Isaac glanced at her in surprise, feeling a strange yet indescribable emotion welling up within him. On the surface, he was as cold and unruffled as ever. "That would be for the best." Kylie said nothing more. She simply turned and walked out of the room. He narrowed his eyes slightly as he watched her retreating back. Seemingly thinking of something, he took out his phone and dialed a certain number. The person on the other end of the phone, Isaac's special assistant Ernest Collins, greeted him respectfully. "Mr. Grant." "Investigate what happened to Kylie after we went our separate ways last night," ordered Isaac. "Understood." Isaac hung up the call after receiving that affirmation. … Kylie's phone rang just as she exited the room, so she walked over to a small balcony to answer the call. The caller was none other than her father, Jonathan Murphy. "Hello, Dad." "Come back for dinner tonight with Isaac, Kylie," he mentioned. Kylie smiled faintly at that before turning him down calmly. "I'll pass. Mom previously told me never to return to that house after leaving." "When did this happen?" he asked. After hearing of the situation from her, he immediately laughed. "Don't you understand how your mother is at this point? She may have a sharp tongue, but she's a soft-hearted person. She probably said something she didn't mean out of anger." Kylie simply chuckled. "I'd still rather not go back and ruin her mood. I still have things to take care of here, Dad, so I'll end the call here." She then hung up without waiting for Jonathan to reply. After tucking her phone away, she braced her hands against the balcony railing, closed her eyes gently, and breathed in the fresh air. … Ernest was quick with his investigation and quickly got back in touch with Isaac. "I found out that Mrs. Grant got into a cab after parting ways with you last night, Mr. Grant," he informed dutifully. "However, that taxi was probably an unlicensed vehicle, because Mrs. Grant jumped out of the car while it was driving along Aquaria Road! "A passing driver then took Mrs. Grant to a hospital before reporting the incident to the police." Isaac's expression twisted instantly upon hearing Ernest's report. Kylie jumped out of a car? So, when she called him back then and told him that she was in the hospital… she had really been injured? "What did the police say?" he asked. Ernest replied, "The police are still investigating the incident, but they've already found some clues." Isaac was silent for several seconds before suddenly asking hoarsely, "What were her injuries?" After a moment of hesitation, Ernest replied, "Well… Her left arm was dislocated, the ankle of her left foot was severely sprained, and she had bruises in multiple locations. Despite that, Mrs. Grant forcibly went through the discharge procedures this morning and left the hospital." Isaac's eyes flashed with some sort of emotion after hearing that. "Alright," he said shortly before hanging up the call. He frowned heavily, feeling conflicted. However, his mood did not last long, and he quickly returned to normal. … Meanwhile, in Parker Villa, Emily placed a bowl of washed fruits in front of Ella. "Eat some fruits, Ella," she encouraged. Ella didn't respond to her. She had her gaze lowered and seemed to be thinking of something. Seeing this, Emily couldn't help but ask, "Are you thinking of Isaac?" Her question successfully got Ella to look up at her. She pursed her lips lightly, looking sad. "Hey, Emily. Do you think… Isaac and Kylie have gotten divorced?" She was honestly unsure as to whether they would actually go through with it. Emily smiled and patted her on the shoulder. "Don't worry, Ella. Isaac will definitely divorce Kylie and marry you. Look, didn't he immediately rush over to see you as soon as he heard you say that your legs weren't feeling good yesterday? "And even though Kylie tried to trick him away, he didn't pay her any mind at all. That's enough to prove that you're more important to him than her." The smile on her face became somewhat meaningful as she continued, "Besides, hasn't Isaac always been under the impression that you saved him in that abduction incident back then? What are you worried about when you have this trump card up your sleeve?"
