Chapter 11
Kylie laughed again when she heard Lana's self-righteous speech.
Was that supposed to be an apology?
It was obviously condemnation!
Lana pressed on before Kylie could speak, saying, "Enough. Bring Isaac back home for dinner tonight."
"I'm busy," came Kylie's cold response.
Lana's anger flared up again at that answer, and she yelled, "I've already been tolerant and compromising enough with you! What else are you dissatisfied with? What? Are you going to insist that you want me, your mother, to personally apologize to you?"
She scoffed coldly before continuing, "So, you don't want to come home anymore, right? Is that it? Fine! Don't come back, then! I'd certainly like to see you—"
Kylie hung up before Lana could even finish speaking.
The hand she was holding her phone with was trembling slightly. She closed her eyes tightly and forced herself not to think about or be affected by this incident anymore.
If she just didn't think about it… If she just didn't concern herself with it… Then, she wouldn't feel upset anymore.
…
"We've arrived at the courthouse, miss," the cab driver informed her, snapping her out of her thoughts.
She finally came back to her senses and replied politely, "Thank you."
After paying the cab fare, she opened the door and got out of the car. She then limped forward, every step she took making her feel as if she was walking on hot coals.
Her injury had worsened after she jumped out of the car yesterday.
Just as she entered the court lobby and was assigned a queue number, a member of Fuschia Manor's household staff delivered her marriage certificate to her.
She sat down in a chair with the said document in hand and took out her phone to call Isaac.
However, as soon as she did so, a tall figure appeared at the entrance of the state court.
The man in question was extremely handsome. By simply standing there like that, he looked like a model, instantly attracting everyone's attention.
After looking around, Isaac's cold gaze landed on Kylie.
His expression remained unchanged until he came in front of her, whereupon he noticed that there was still a wound on her left cheekbone.
His eyebrows twitched minutely.
Had she… really gotten hurt last night?
On the other hand, Kylie's expression didn't change at all upon Isaac's arrival.
This was her second time visiting the courthouse, but she was in a completely different frame of mind from the last time she had been here.
The first time she had been here, her heart had been filled with excitement and longing.
Back then, she had been looking forward to living a happy life with Isaac after marriage.
However, reality had slapped her out of her wishful thinking again and again. And now… she had finally fully sobered up to the harsh reality.
In the past, she always felt that the waiting period was incredibly long; now, it felt like barely a few minutes had passed before it was her and Isaac's turn.
They stood up together but had barely taken two steps forward before his phone started ringing.
Isaac glanced at his phone and saw that it was Margaret calling him.
After a moment's thought, he still decided to reach out and tap on the answer button. "Hello?"
Margaret's anxious, worried tone rang out from the other end of the phone. "Hurry up and come back to the Grant residence, Isaac! Rachel's having an asthma attack!"
Isaac's expression immediately changed upon hearing this. "I'll be right there!"
He then hung up the call and turned to look at Kylie, who had an indifferent expression. "Grandma's having an asthma attack!"
Kylie's calm face instantly took on a hint of panic. "What?"
She turned and limped out of the courthouse without hesitation.
Isaac's eyes darkened a little at the sight of her limp.
However, his strange mood only lasted two seconds, and he soon rushed out as well.
…
When they arrived at the Grant residence, they headed directly for Rachel's room.
Rachel was lying on the bed with her eyes shut tight, and her face was deathly pale. Overall, she looked extremely frail and seemed like a glass doll prone to breaking at any moment.
Kylie felt as if there were a pair of invisible hands mercilessly squeezing her heart at the sight of Rachel looking like that.
"How's Rachel, Dr. Peterson?" Kylie quietly asked the family doctor, Matthew Peterson.
"Her condition is temporarily stable," replied Matthew before turning to look at Isaac and the others.
He paused for a moment, then continued, "In addition to the usual issues that require careful attention, please also remember not to provoke or upset her. After experiencing heightened emotions, her heartbeat will accelerate and her breathing will quicken.
"This will, in turn, trigger a stress response along her airways, leading to an asthma attack."
After listening to Matthew's instructions, Isaac nodded. "Alright. I understand."
Matthew then left the room with his medical kit.
Isaac frowned and looked at Margaret. "Why did Grandma's asthma suddenly act up, Mom?"
Margaret shook her head and replied, "I don't know either. I had just come down the stairs when I saw Rachel sitting on the couch with her hands over her chest, panting nonstop. I was frightened and immediately went to get her asthma medication.
"However, she fainted after just a few sprays, so I immediately called the family doctor."
Isaac nodded and looked worriedly at Rachel, saying nothing more.
They all remained sitting in Rachel's room, waiting for her to wake up.
It was uncertain how long it took for Rachel to finally regain consciousness.
Kylie was the first to notice that she was awake. She immediately walked over to Rachel's bedside and asked gently, "Are you awake, Rachel?"
Isaac and Margaret also rushed forward upon hearing her question.
Rachel couldn't describe how she felt when she saw Kylie. She stretched her hand out from under the covers, trying to hold her hand.
Kylie hurriedly held onto Rachel's hand and asked, "What is it, Grandma? Is there something you want to say to me?"
Rachel looked at her with distress and asked in a very hoarse voice, "Why are you injured again, Kylie?"
Kylie smiled and replied, "Don't worry, Grandma. I accidentally fell down. That's all."
Isaac glanced at her at that, indistinct emotions swimming in his dark eyes.
Rachel glared at Kylie with a hint of anger. "Oh, Kylie, why can't you be more careful?"
Kylie shook her head. "I'm already alright!"
After a pause, she changed the topic. "In fact, that's my line, Grandma! You were doing just fine before, so why did you suddenly get an asthma attack?"
Margaret approached and exclaimed nervously, "That's right, Rachel! You really scared me to death today!"
She still felt a lingering sense of fear when she recalled how she had found Rachel before.
"Sorry for worrying you," Rachel said to her. She paused, then said reassuringly, "Don't worry, all of you. I'm alright."
At that moment, she suddenly glanced up at Isaac and said, "I just had a sudden thought, you see. I wondered whether Isaac would suddenly get the foolish idea to divorce Kylie now that Ella is back.
"The moment I thought of that possibility, I found it hard to calm down. That's why I became overly emotional for a moment."
Both Kylie and Isaac immediately stiffened in response.
