Chapter 119
Elena’s POV
For a brief instant, fear crossed Sara’s face before she hid it. My chest tightened, she was truly afraid. She swallowed and lifted her chin, forcing tears into her eyes. “I haven’t seen that man since I left Eric,” she said loudly. “Isn’t it normal if I didn’t recognize him at first? Elena, what are you trying to do now? Are you accusing me again?”
“Yes,” I replied, my voice steady. “I believe Ken was acting on your orders when he tried to kill me.”
The room erupted. Gasps, angry murmurs, sharp whispers. One of the council members scoffed, slamming his cane against the floor. “That’s nonsense! Why would a woman of Lady Sara’s standing ever harm her?”
I understood then why she’d brought them. She wanted shields. She always did. Sara pressed a hand to her chest and spoke in a trembling tone. “This isn’t the first time she’s said such terrible things about me. Elders, I don’t know how much more I can take. I’m frightened. I feel attacked.”
Attacked? I almost laughed.
