“I find it hard to belive…is it really correct?” My voice shook, and my hands fumbled nervously as I tried to hold them still.

Eric’s gray eyes softened, and he shook his head with a slow, serious nod. “We had her hair sample tested and matched. With your sample. I’m afraid the results are real, Elena. I’m so sorry.”
I collapsed against him, pressing my face into his chest as if I could disappear into him. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me so tightly I felt like the world outside couldn’t touch me.
“We ran through all the worst scenarios,” he whispered, brushing a hand over my hair in soothing circles. “You were ready for this. And… you’re not a child anymore. You don’t really need them. The only reason we even looked for your mother was because she might help with your health. Once you’re stronger, you don’t have to see her again…unless you choose to.”
