The medical world wasn't large, so if Gary was terminated with cause, the news would soon be known throughout the entire community.
When that happened, colleagues who had once been jealous of him might start ostracizing him.
Gary understood Teresa's concerns, but he wasn't worried. He simply smiled calmly and said, "Don't worry. When the time is right, I'm sure the hospital will personally invite me back to work."
Despite his confident tone, Teresa was still uneasy. "So, what happened? There has to be a reason they fired you."
He smiled instead of giving her an explanation. "Don't worry about me too much, Teresa. It's just a trivial matter."
Seeing as he'd said as much, she finally relaxed. "That's true. You're Gary Chapman, after all. Many brain surgeries can't be performed without you, so it's their loss for firing you."
He chimed in, "It's nothing. I'll just consider it a vacation."
Feeling relieved, Teresa exchanged a few more pleasantries with him before hanging up.
