Kathleen cared about Shawn, but it wasn't romantic love. Her concern stemmed from the fact that Shawn had once saved her mother.

"It smells wonderful," Melanie remarked, bringing the bowl to her nose.

"Should I be flattered?" Kathleen asked jokingly.
Melanie took a sip of the soup, looked Kathleen straight in the eye with a sparkle, and said, "Even if you don't want to hear it, I must say it one last time—thank you."
Kathleen found these situations awkward and uncomfortable. She waved her hand dismissively. "Enough already. We're not that close."
