Eventually, the hatch to the tunnels came into view. It was nestled in the woods, not far from where we had taken the portal in, covered loosely with leaves and pine needles. No one ever came out here, and if they did, they paid it no mind; to the naked eye, it was nothing more than a hatch leading to a maintenance bunker for the campus.
But to us, it meant so much more.
“I hate going in there,” I said softly, drawing in a deep breath as we approached.
Enzo stopped in his tracks and sent me an apologetic look. He knew firsthand the horrors that we experienced down there, although I think he was braver than me. He never complained about it like I did.
“You don’t have to,” he said. “I can take you home.”
But I shook my head. “No,” I said, “it’s okay. I need to start getting used to it.”
Enzo nodded gently. “Remember, it’s different now,” he assured me. “It’s nothing at all like it was before.”
