Chapter 6

By midnight, no one had come to pick me up as Lester promised. After getting my wounds treated at the clinic, I stumbled home and scrubbed myself raw in the bathroom. Lying in bed, today's nightmare played on repeat in my mind. I didn't sleep a wink. Only when daylight broke did I gather enough strength to rise. Today was the day I get my immigration permit. From now on, I had nothing to do with Lester anymore. I gathered the two agreements and packed all my documents and ready to leave. At the door, I collided head-on with Lester. His face was gloomy. When he saw me, a trace of anger flashed in his eyes. Then, a heavy slap landed on my face. I was thrown away by Lester and couldn't help but groan in pain. A complex emotion flickered in Lester's eyes. Then, as if struck by some thought, it shifted to pure hatred and disappointment. “Lorraine, why did you conspire with those people? Why did you stage this kidnapping? Do you know Letitia lost her child?!” He glared at me with venom, raising his hand again. But upon seeing my battered state, his hand trembled and fell. “Lorraine, what do you want me to do?” “It wasn't me!” I couldn't help but scream. Lester's gaze held no trace of tenderness. He closed his eyes tightly, then announced calmly, “From now on, I'll stay by Letitia's side. I'll make amends in your place. Once she recovers, we'll hold a wedding. Externally, she'll be announced as Ms. Turner, the wife of President of the Turner Group. But internally, you'll remain my Ms. Turner.” I forced a smile and lowered my eyes. “Lester, this is what you wanted, isn't it?” Lester looked at me with disappointment. “You made the mistake first. I'm merely paying for it on your behalf. You've lost a child too—why can't you empathize with Letitia?” My heart clenched in pain, and the last shred of feeling I had for Lester vanished into thin air. Under Lester's gaze, I nodded calmly. Lester frowned, seemingly surprised by my composure. But soon, the phone rang again. Without hesitation, he turned and walked away. Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed with a text from Letitia. 【Why are you so resilient? I've done everything to eliminate you, yet you still survive. If you know what's good for you, leave immediately. Lester has always loved me—from the very beginning. He still doesn't know the child in your womb is dead too. Isn't that proof enough?】 She sent countless photos. In them, Lester's expression was so tender. So this was how he truly loved someone. I calmly blocked Letitia. After completing all procedures, I no longer existed within the Turner Group. Two divorce certificates now rested in my hands. Before leaving, I retrieved the box containing my unborn baby from the freezer. Alongside the divorce papers and several USB drives holding surveillance footage, I placed them in the living room. My immigration papers were secured. From this day forward, Lester and I would dwell in separate lands, never to meet again!
