The spy barely made it to the meeting point.
Raymond stood beneath the cover of thick evergreens, his sharp eyes scanning the treeline as the wounded messenger limped toward him. The man—one of their informants stationed near the eastern packs—was barely standing. His left arm was burned, his face smeared with soot and blood.
Raymond caught him before he could collapse.
“What happened?” he demanded.
The spy coughed, gripping Raymond’s jacket. “They’re gone.”
Raymond’s stomach dropped. “Who?”
“The Red Claw pack. The entire bloodline. Wiped out.” The spy’s voice trembled. “It wasn’t rogues. It wasn’t humans. It was something else.”
Raymond gritted his teeth. “Tell me everything.”
The spy swallowed hard, shaking his head. “They didn’t stand a chance. It happened fast. Shadows moving between trees, like something alive. Wolves howling, but their voices were wrong—distorted. I ran before I could see who or what was leading them.”
