Chapter 668
"Maeve?" Liam was taken aback. He hadn't expected her to come back.
She had the car and the perfect opportunity to escape—so why did she return?
"Bastard!" Maeve spat furiously, yet Liam remained calm, showing no trace of anger.
"Ms. Scott, how… how did you end up back here?" The bodyguard standing beside Liam looked just as confused. Anyone could see that this was her best chance to run.
"Of course, I had to come back! Liam, you're such a jerk for letting your people try to kill me! What did I do to deserve this?"
As she spoke, Maeve boldly reached for the gun tucked at Liam's waist. She feigned outrage. "I'm right here. If you want to kill me, do it now—openly!"
As she spoke, she watched Liam's expression closely. She was certain he wasn't behind the attempt on her life.
During her frantic dash to the car, the thought of fleeing had crossed her mind, but it didn't last long.
She barely knew her way around Yewridge, and Conner's influence was far-reaching. He could hunt her down a thousand different ways.
Besides, her odds of escaping were slim. She didn't even have a penny to her name. If she got caught, she'd lose the trust she'd worked so hard to earn with Liam.
Liam despised betrayal, and her fate might end up no better than Julian's, who'd been thrown into the sea. It was smarter to return and regain Liam's trust.
Still, she needed a solid reason for giving up her escape. She had to craft a lie—one that seemed logical but could still be questioned by Liam.
As expected, Liam took the bait and believed she had misunderstood him.
With a scoff, he said, "If I wanted you dead, do you really think I'd need someone to drag you to the sea? Maeve, do you ever use your brain?"
Maeve pretended to be clueless and countered, "But those men were yours!"
"My people don't necessarily act on my orders," he replied sharply.
Maeve was satisfied that she had made her point and pressed on. "Fine. But it was your men who tried to kill me, so you owe me an explanation."
"I've already had them tossed into the sea to feed the fish. Is there anything else you'd like, Ms. Scott?"
For a moment, Maeve was at a loss for words. To Liam, human lives seemed so trivial.
This was supposed to be a society governed by law. It was one thing for Liam to behave this way in Laventon, but in Yewridge, he still dared to disregard the law entirely.
"What's wrong? Don't you have other requests?" he asked.
"Of course I do." Maeve frowned. "Those two were probably hired to kill me. I want to know who's behind it."
"Is that all?"
"That's it."
Liam chuckled suddenly, and Maeve narrowed her eyes. "What's so funny?"
"I thought you'd want me to handle whoever's pulling the strings."
"What goes around comes around. I have my methods, so you don't have to worry about it."
"Alright then." Liam strolled casually toward the elevator in the underground garage. "I'm tired. I'm going to bed."
Watching his carefree attitude, Maeve couldn't shake her doubts. Could he really track down the mastermind behind all this?
The bodyguard was unable to hold back and added, "Ms. Scott, Mr. Larson was genuinely worried about you earlier."
Maeve scoffed lightly, "He's not concerned about me."
What Liam truly cared about was the secret buried deep within the Scott family's memorial hall.
