The grip on Emily’s wrist was firm, unyielding, and for a moment, I thought she might lash out, but the hand holding her was not mine. I turned, my breath catching in my throat, to find none other than my father standing behind her. His tall, imposing figure blocked the doorway, his eyes fixed on Emily with a sharpness I hadn’t seen in years. His presence was both a comfort and a threat.
