Max’s Point of View
I stood outside Eva’s office once again, the bouquet of her favorite flowers trembling slightly in my hand. The vibrant colors of the lilies and roses seemed to mock the turmoil in my chest. I had spent hours rehearsing what I would say, but now, standing here, the words felt inadequate.
I took a deep breath, steadying myself before knocking. Her voice, calm and professional, came through the door.
“Come in.”
Pushing the door open, I stepped inside. Eva was seated at her desk, her fingers dancing across the keyboard. She looked up briefly, her expression neutral. There was no warmth, no flicker of the woman who had once looked at me with love.
“Max,” she said flatly, her tone devoid of emotion. “What do you want?”
I swallowed hard, my grip tightening on the bouquet of white lilies I’d spent too much time picking out. “I wanted to see you. To talk.”
