The steady beeping of the heart monitor echoed through the private hospital room, each sound like a nail being driven into my skull. The place reeked of antiseptic and despair, mixed with the cloying sweetness of too many flower arrangements. Every surface was crowded with them roses, lilies, orchids each accompanied by cards expressing manufactured concern. I picked up the nearest one, my lip curling as I read the message. "Get well soon, old friend." I crumpled it in my fist, tossing it toward the overflowing
