Sara's earlier outburst had left an almost tangible darkness in the air, her venomous words still echoing in my mind like a broken record. I stood by my father's bedside, my trembling fingers barely touching his cold hand. The great William Brown the man who had seemed larger than life itself now lay still and vulnerable, surrounded by beeping monitors and IV lines.
The evening shadows crept across the room, painting everything in shades of gray. A nurse had come by earlier to draw the blinds, but I'd opened them again, needing to see the sky darken, to remind myself that time was still moving forward even though everything in this room felt frozen.
